Past Principals

In August 1875, an ambitious young man from Maine arrived in Seattle. He accepted the position of head teacher at three of Seattle’s schools. Within fourteen years he had revised the promotion system, led educational fights in the State Legislature, and been elected superintendent of the Seattle Schools, and increased enrollment in the schools from 150 to 1700.

His great love and concern for children was seen in all he did. His recreational work included the introduction of the Boy Scout movement to the Pacific Northwest. An avid mountain climber, he scaled Mount Rainier eighteen times. It is particularly appropriate that one of the highest glaciers on Mount Rainier, Ingraham Glacier, is named for a man of such gifts.

It is also fitting that our school, Edward Sturgis Ingraham’s namesake, opened in 1959. His spirit to strive for the highest attainments is echoed in our nicknames, the Mountaineers, and the Rams; our newspaper, the Cascade; and our annual, the Glacier.

Since it’s opening, eight principals have guided Ingraham High school. They are:

  • Claude F. Turner 1959-1962
  • John Maxey 1963-1975
  • Charles R. Hough 1975-1980
  • Steve Wilson 1980-1988
  • Ammon McWashington 1988-1991
  • Gloria Izard Baldwin 1991-2002
  • Steve Wilson 2002-2004
  • Martin Floe 2004-Present
